AU LIBÉRIA, GEORGE WEAH ACCEPTE SA DÉFAITE À LA PRÉSIDENTIELLE
L’ ancien ballon d’or France football élu président de la République du Libéria en 2017 a félicité son adversaire Joseph Boakai vendredi soir dans un message à la radio nationale.

Après seulement un mandat, George Weah s’en va. Le président du Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), le parti au pouvoir, a été battu à l’élection présidentielle par l’opposant Joseph Boakai, et a aussitôt reconnu sa défaite.
« Ce soir, le CDC a perdu l’élection mais le Libéria a gagné. C’est le temps de l’élégance dans la défaite », a déclaré George Weah, ancienne gloire internationale et ballon d’or France football, dans un message à la radio nationale. Une posture d’autant plus élégante que le président sortant, très critiqué pour son bilan en deçà des attentes des Libériens en matière de lutte contre la pauvreté et la corruption, n’a pas attendu la proclamation définitive des résultats pour concéder sa défaite dans un scrutin serré. « Les résultats annoncés ce soir, bien que non finaux, indiquent que monsieur Boakai a une avance que nous ne pouvons pas rattraper. J’ai parlé au président élu Joseph Boakai pour le féliciter pour sa victoire », a ajouté George Weah, écartant un peu plus le spectre des violences post électorales dans un pays meurtri par quatorze ans (1989-2003) de guerre civile et 250 000 morts.
En effet, les résultats publiés vendredi soir par la commission électorale donnaient vainqueur Joseph Boakai avec 50,89 % , conte 49,11 % pour George Weah. Soit 28000 voix d’avance en faveur de l’ancien Vice-président de Sirleaf Ellen Johnson, après le dépouillement de 1,6 millions de bulletins.
À 78 ans, Joseph Boakai devient le troisième président démocratiquement élu du Libéria, dans un contexte régional marqué par la recrudescence des coups d’Etat militaires en Afrique de l’Ouest, notamment au Mali, au Burkina Faso, en Guinée Conakry et au Niger ces trois dernières années.
Leçon démocratique
Au plan sécuritaire, le scrutin s’est « globalement bien déroulé » selon plusieurs observateurs indépendants, en dépit des violents affrontements qui ont émaillé la campagne électorale, faisant également des morts.
De nombreux pays et partenaires internationaux à l’instar des États-Unis, la Cedéao et l’Union Européenne ont félicité George Weah pour son élégance, Joseph Boakai pour sa victoire, et le Libéria pour cette transition pacifique, à l’heure où les démocraties sont fortement contestées dans le Sud global. Une belle revanche politique pour Joseph Boakai qui avait largement perdu contre George Weah en 2017, l’ancien footballeur l’ayant emporté avec plus de 61% des voix. Porté cette fois-ci par d’autres grosses pointures politiques du Liberia, Joseph Boakai devra pendant au moins six ans mettre à profit son mandat pour faire reculer la pauvreté dans ce pays d’environ 5 millions d’habitants, l’un des plus pauvres au monde selon la banque mondiale, où plus d’un cinquième de la population vit avec moins de 2,15 dollars par jour.
